The stage production preserves the trademark peculiar humor and the experimental inventiveness of Urmuz and at the same time highlights aspects, narrative lines and ideas which in the original text could be contradicting or confusing. The Scholarly Conspiracy presents a political adventure where unpredictability, duplicity, adulation, the mirage of power and betrayal are key words. Politics are in this distorted world just a trampoline for upstartness and the rules of the game are inflexible: whomever is not conforming will meet a nasty end. Sounds strangely familiar, doesn’t it?
